LORE AND LAIR:  AN ARTIST'S VISION

THE WORK OF BRADFORD SMITH

March 1 -31  [Weekdays:  11 - 2 PM]

Opening Reception:   March 5   5-9PM

From the age of 9, Bradford Smith entered the world of photography, helping his grandfather, Joseph K. Dunlop, in his darkroom, coating glass negatives.

Bradford's own first published photograph appeared when he was 12 years old, in Better Homes and Gardens magazine.  Influenced by his grandfather, Bradford's life path would veer 180 degrees from life on his family's dairy farm in Ballston Spa, NY.

In the 1950's, Bradford could be found photographing in New York City.  Sixty stories up on an I-beam on one of New York's most distinguished realtor and financier's buildings, Paul Tishman.  his photographic career would cross paths with some of the professions's greats, including Phillippe Halsmann, Victor Keppler, Richard Avedon, Lillian Bassman, art director, Alexander Brodovich and editor, Ann Whitney, of Harper's Bazaar, who opened a studio with Bradford in the mid-1950's.

Bradford went on to work with Walter Cronkite and later became the largest independent photography contractor for Genral Electric in Schenectady.  Now in his eighth decade, Bradford's camera shooting career continues, as he travels cross-country photographing New York's Adirondacks, ghost towns in California,  Yosemite National Park, and the greater Albany area with his mannequin, Carol.

Once having had his own gallery in Saratoga Springs, he now sells his work through his internet website, www.bradfordgallery.com

From Vacancy to . . . .  the BAC.

The Broadway Art Center has risen like a phoenix from a vacant retail space to a flourishing art hub in the downtown prime.

The staff of volunteers that have given of themselves to have this transformation take place and succeed have repaired and newly painted the walls in the "Burgundy Room."  You may have noticed that the barren, boring windows have been filled with displays of art and three-dimension pieces.  This just isn't any art center for canvas; you will notice some framed prints and astonishing quilted pieces are on display also.

Recently an etagere and display case has been installed in the newly repainted retail gift area.  There is 36 linear feet of new display shelving, more track lighting and a new LED OPEN sign in the window.

. . . there will be lots of beautiful summer days with noontime foot traffic.
